  1. As expressed in the famous description of Zen attributed to Bodhidharma, “A special transmission outside the scriptures, not relying on words and letters / Direct pointing to the human mind, seeing one’s true nature and attaining Buddhahood,” the essential standpoint of the Zen school is not to depend on words and letters. Nevertheless, it does regard the study and chanting of sacred texts as an important part of Zen practice.

    懺悔文 (Sangemon)

    All the evil karma ever created by me in the past;
    on account of my beginningless attachment, aversion, and ignorance;
    arising from my actions, speech and thought;
    I now confess openly and fully.

  3. I hate to sound like False News, but some have asked me what amahchewahwah means.

    When the youngest of my children was a young boy, he used to always be able to difuse any situation we might be having by looking into my eyes and saying, “I’m a chihuahua”. This would always result in hilarious laughter from me, and after that I would have a very hard time remaining serious. He used this to great advantage on many occasions.

    Sometimes when I am stressed out and feeling angry I can recall that phrase and it still make me smile. When I see Bush I often imagine him saying it and it chills me out. So amahchewahwah is my own inner phonetic representation of how I imagine Bush saying that phrase, and it always tickles me.

    Also, I used to call my maternal grandmother Amah, so I guess that figures in there somewhere.

  5. Hello sangemon,

    I came here at Steve Fleischman’s request. He and I know each other because Steve worked with my ex-husband, now deceased, at ABC in the 1960s.

    Funny about names. For four years (2004-2008), I wrote comments at the Democratic Underground.com. They offered us an on-line journal and I really had a good time with that. My screen name was Radio_Lady. Easy choice. I have worked in media off and on for more than fifty years.

    One fellow decided to use the screen name of phrigndumass.

    For a while, I thought he was from Massachusetts. Not so.

    One day, I asked him, “What does your screen name mean?”

    The story is essentially this: He was talking to a friend. They got into a heated political conversation. Finally, the friend called him a “FRIGGIN’ DUMBASS” — and that’s how he came up with the screen name, spelled kind of phonetically.

    He’s still there, and he did some amazing work predicting the 2008 election:

    I don’t know how HTML works at your site, so I won’t mess around with it.

    Peace, love and happiness,(Our sign-off from the kid’s show I co-hosted in 1957-58 while in college)

    EK
